As we ease into the fall/winter months, there’s no doubt that sometimes all we want is comfort food. Hot Wok, a small family-owned Hakka-Chinese restaurant located on 7 Progress Ave (just off Kennedy Road) is a true hidden gem to enjoy a warm and fulfilling meal. Whether you decide to dine-in, take-out, or order delivery from the comfort of your own bed, Hot Wok is at your service.

The menu at Hot Work offers a large array of items – from soups (hot and sour, wonton), fried rice, Hakka Chow Mein, Manchurian chicken, masala beef, chilli fish/seafood dishes, and a variety of dinner specials, there’s something for everyone. While it can be hard to narrow down your choice from all the options available, we promise these next two picks are a must-try.

After browsing through all the delicious dishes on the menu, we ended up opting for the Dry Chilli Chicken and the Hakka Chicken Chow Mein. Keep in mind that the portions at Hot Wok are large enough to share for 2-3 people, as we had plenty leftover. It’s the perfect place to go with a group of friends, order a few dishes, and give everyone the chance to try a bit of each. After all, we guarantee you’ll want to try more than one!

One of their most popular dishes, the Dry Chilli Chicken, comes exactly as the name entails – pieces of fried chicken, tossed in a spicy hot chilli sauce, and accompanied with a bowl of white rice. There’s also the option to get the gravy-style version for a saucier option. The chicken paired perfectly with the Hakka-style Chow Mein noodles filled with stir fry vegetables (onions and peppers) and helped balance out some of the heat.

Most dishes at Hot Work are reasonably priced under $11, and there’s no doubt that you get a large quantity of food.  There’s even lunch and early dinner specials to check out on the cheap. When dining in, expect to be greeted with a friendly server and very quick service, so if you’re in a rush this is the place to be.

The best part is that Hot Wok is open late most nights (until 11pm), so consider skipping the order of pizza next time and give this great Hakka-Chinese restaurant a try!
