This month Kennedy Eats is taking you to experience the vibrant cuisine of the Caribbean islands with our visit to Just Love Caribbean Restaurant & Bar. While our visit was short and sweet, it was a true testament that delicious food lies right in the heart of the community on Kennedy Road. After all, we know that certain restaurants can be hit or miss, but luckily Just Love Caribbean exceeded our expectations.

This restaurant and bar features more than your average burger and fries, they carry an array of Jamaican-style main dishes featuring fried chicken, oxtail, stewed and curried chicken, curry goat, chicken wings, and of course, ackee and saltfish. Each main (either small or large size) is served with a heaping amount of delicious rice and beans and creamy coleslaw. Plus, it’s all available at a reasonable price – and what you get are quality dishes immersed with flavour. For this tasting, we ordered the fried chicken and jerk chicken meals (under $10 each when dining in), and trust us when we say it kept us wanting to try more!

Caribbean cuisine has been around for decades, bringing about global influence from the island’s early settlers. With the multitude of cultural food fusions and endless list of restaurants, it can be overwhelming to find what you’re looking for. Luckily, an internationally popular and famous dish like jerk chicken is available in most, if not all, Caribbean restaurants, but finding one that has that has true authentic flavour is key. While some recipes call for a lot of heat, we all know what truly makes ‘jerk’ so special is its smoky, slightly charred, barbequed taste. Just Love’s jerk chicken is nothing less; it’s home-style dry rub gives its chicken the perfect amount of smokiness, without being too sweet or spicy. The fried chicken was also dipped in a light batter, revealing decadently tender, lightly spiced, and crispy chicken! Accompanied by the rice & peas, and coleslaw, these dishes were a match made together.

For the avid Jerk lover, Just Love does not fail. It’s an affordable option to experience the flavour of authentic Jamaican dishes without taking a trip to the islands. What you’ll get are huge portions, great taste, and an even better environment to listen to reggae music (with a live DJ Friday and Saturday nights!). We couldn’t think of a better place to enjoy good vibes, mouth-watering dishes, and great music. So next time you’re in the area, you’ll be glad you stopped by.
